Day 1 of Spring Cleaning – The Purge
Okay, so we had a rough start to our Spring Cleaning day. Last night, Big D woke with a horrible stomach ache. This, of course, woke Little C, who cried for Mama the entire time I was helping Big D. Daddy tried to calm him, but he only wanted Mama. He’s such a Mama’s boy.
So, after we finally got Big D to bed, I put Little C in the bed with me. I don’t sleep very well when I have to do that, but I sleep some…which as many of you can relate, is better than nothing.
Day 1 – The Purge Begins
Closets – We cleaned out 4 closets of clothes, shoes, household items, baby stuff, linens, you name it.
We were pretty ruthless. Granted, we don’t have as much stuff as some people, but I pretty much said to myself, “If I don’t use this now (or have specific plans for the future) and wouldn’t take it to Australia if we moved back…it’s gone”!
Basement – My husband threw away a bunch of old stuff that has just been collecting dust down there. Stuff that was left even by the previous owners 5 years ago! We also got rid of some games and Christmas decorations that were being stored that we don’t use.
Toys – This is a hard one since Big D has outgrown some that Little C will probably play with in 6 months to a year. So, I filled a plastic tote and put it down into the basement. Some are ones that just don’t get played with that I will either bring out to test again or give away. Others were ones that I will bring out when Little C is older.
We also threw away some broken stuff, got a ‘sell‘ pile ready for posting on Craigslist or Ebay and filled a bag of things to give back to my sister (she is going to hate that as she is battling ‘stuff’ herself).
I would say however, that my biggest battle right now is photos and keepsakes. I have about 7 or 8 shoebox sized boxes filled with photos, cards, and little keepsakes that I need to put into albums of some sort. Arg. And don’t even get me started with the number of photos on my computer. I shudder to think!
But, overall, a successful day. I went to pick up the kids from my parents while my husband took the loot to Goodwill. See what he took! And, no that is not a power washer in that box (for any men who might be reading this), it’s a big Christmas decoration.
On his way home he picked up some Chinese. The fortune from my cookie said, “Focus on your long term goal. Good things will soon happen“. Not bad!
So, the next step of our Spring Cleaning is to clean out the linen closet and re-organize the file drawer. Oh Geez, and Taxes. I’ve never waited this long to do my taxes. I’ll have to do that next week. Gag.
Are you doing any spring cleaning? If so, do you have any tips??

Looking at that pile makes me want to breathe a sigh of relief!
We are battling our junk too, because I want to move into a smaller house in about 4 months. I think it will be worth it to save more money to put towards travel!

Yes, one of our 2-4 year plans is to take the equity out of our house to buy another, less expensive one, so we can either have no mortgage, or a very small one…and more money for travel. I hope you blog about your move and the thinking/plans behind it. That would be an interesting read. Thanks for visiting!
