Hi Denise. I absolutely love Brisbane. Sydney is beautiful, but it's also a lot bigger and a LOT more expensive. Because Sydney is bigger, it's also more cosmopolitan, according to many. Brisbane has almost 2 million people and I think is very cosmopolitan as well, but also a bit more laid back. It's also a lot warmer for longer in Brissie since it's farther north. I can't vouch for safety in Sydney since I never lived there, but I felt safe in Brisbane.

As for beaches, Sydney has beautiful beaches IN the city, like Bondi, Bronte, Coodgie, etc. In Brisbane, you need to go about 1/2 south to the Gold Coast or an hour north to the Sunshine Coast to get beaches. The Gold Coast is super touristy in places like Surfer's Paradise, but you can go to beaches just near there that aren't that way at all, mostly locals. The Sunshine Coast is my fave. That is where we always go since our family lives there. Mooloolaba, King's Beach, Dickey Beach are our faves, but there are tons up there. Noosa is pretty popular, very upmarket.

Check out www.floridagirlinsydney.com for more on Sydney, she's got a great blog. You can also check out either www.matesupover.com (forum of expat Aussies in the US) or www.yanksdownunder.net (a forum of expat Americans in Oz) for more answers.

Good luck with your search! I'm excited for you!

Hi,

I am a single 40 year old female traveling to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland to search for a new home and would love your insight on Brisbane vs. Sydney. I've heard that a lot of people are moving from Sydney from Brisbane and was curious about that. Any insight on the pros/cons between to the two cities? I currently live in S.F. and am looking for warmer weather, beautiful beaches, a cultural city life and somewhere safe.

Thank you.
